BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. ROAD FOREMAN'S REPORT. During the month the road staff has been engaged in the following works: —Mixing asphalt, in CounflS yard; repairing damages to fence at Triangle; grading footpath Whyte St.; renewing facing and repairing fence around culvert in Spring St.; weeding water channels and footpaths, Main St.; cleaning and burning tree trimmings, Victoria Park and general maintenance. Whyte St. footpath is now ready for top-dressing and given good weather will soon he completed. Park St. null then be commenced. There is already asphalt ready for this work and more is being mixed as weather permits. The Belmont metal ordered on the 14th August has only begun to arrive during the last few days. Owing to the delay and very showery weather, portions of our roads are in a had state. The worst sections are being attended to as metal comes to hand.

WATER. AND DRAINAGE REPORT

During the month the following works have been carried out: — Caulking the delivery pipe in the tower; connecting up one house with the high pressure water supply and extending one service. An inspection in the septic tank was made during the month and it is working very satisfactorily. Twenty-two and a-half hours work was performed at the gas works and all maintenance work has been attended to. Pumping Station Report—Maintenance cost: Coal, 1 ton 16cwt. £5 3/6; oil, G/t): wages £7 0/3, miscellaneous 13/6, total £l3 4/-. Number of hours spent pumping water, 66, with « result that 755,000 gallons were pumped at a eosf of 44d per 1,000 gallons. Maintenance, Waterworks" £0 18/10; do., Drainage: £3 8/3; do.. By-laws £4 5/-. Twentyfour hours were spent on outside work, producing £2 12/-. CORRESPONDEN CE was read and dealt with as follows: From the Foxton Fire Board, pointing out that there was,no fire plug at the corner of Johnston and Cook Sts., although same is marked on the plan as being provided.— Decided that plug he put in if not already there. From J. Linklater Esq.. M.P. stating that, he bad interviewed the. State Advances Superintendent with regard to a further advance to the Council, hv way of loan for drainage works. He had been informed that on account of the demand for financial assistance, no further loans could be entertained by the Department at the present time.—Received. From the Prime Minister, acknowledging receipt of Council’s letter of the Sib inst,, forwarding a copy of the resolution passed at a meeting of the Council attended by the Foxton Chamber of Commerce and members of the Borough Council, protesting against the construction of (he proposed Palmerston North deviation line of railway, and suggesting that before any further sums are authorised for this work the proposed Levin-Marlon deviation and the Palmerston N. deviations, with surveys and detailed estimates of present day costs, he placed before the English Commission 'for their opinion. ‘ln reply he informed the Council that . representations contained in the resolution have been duly noted and will receive careful"consideration. Tt is noted that, a deputation will wait upon the Prime Minister in connection with this matter. —Received. GENERAL.

It was decided that the Mayor and the -treasurer he authorised to sign debentures Nos. 1 and 2 in respect of a loan of £2,000 from the State Advances Office. Decided that portion of Avenue Road, in front of the Town Hall, be asphalted the full width of the roadway, when Cook St. footpath has been completed, In moving the above motion, Or. Bryant pointed out the necessity for this work. Patrons to the Town Hall, parking their ears outside, had, in wet weather, to walk through puddles to get to the hall. He J also suggested that proper parking arrangements be made.
