DIstTSsED 15Y TTOROAYHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
AI iSnimday's meeting of the TTn-iow■lu-miji County Council, a letter was received from ilie Foxton Chamber of Cnimnorco, stating that .Messrs f.inklaier and Field, Al.’sP.. had l)oea successful in obtaining- the eonscnl of I he Minister of Railways for the question of the proposed Lcvin-Alarion deviation being- submitted to the Railway Commissioners, who are to make inquiries at an early date. The Premier and the Minister of Railways would receive a deputation on October lGth and the Minister had asked that the deputation lay before him as many economic arguments as possible. The chamber hoped that the council would send a delegate. The letter was formally received, but the question came up again later when the chairman (Cr. Monk), in discussing the proposed deviation at Palmerston X., staled that, in his opinion, if the Tawa Flat deviation were carried out, it would be of great assistance a.s far as the Levin-oreatford scheme was concerned. it was almost certain that the question of the latter route would have to be considered before anything was done at Palmerston North.
Cr. Ilarkness pointed out that a saving of Mi miles would mean a reduction on running costs of £32,000 per annum, which he considered most desirable. It was the duty of the council to do its utmost to slay the hand of the. Government in regard to the Palmerston N T . work. Cr. Catlev: I understand that two commissions have already reported against the Levin-Great ford scheme. Cr. Monk suggested lhat Crs. Ifarkness, Ryder and Galley be appointed delegates, to wail on the Minis)er on < letober 1 til li.
Cr. Galley slaled that, while lie was a gains i iho Palmerston X'. deviation he was not prepared to support the local scheme a.s he thought there were other matters requiring attention more urgently. Crs. Markin ss and Ryder were eventually appointed.

The time to speak on the railway report is not yet. 1 myself q,ok. for a minute or so when the report was brought down. The real time to diseuss the report will be when it comes before the House in its proper form. 1 can say this: That the Matiawaiu constituency could not have an abler or more thoroughly conscientious representative in the House than Air Linklater."
