FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.
TENDERS ACCEPTED.
FOR SHED AND WHARF -* EXTENSION. The question of accommodation ■ for the storage and sorting of goods at the local wharf has been before the Board for some time. The accommodation in the railway goods shed has been inadequate to meet requirements.. Some time since, the Board purchased the coal bins at the wharf from the liquidated assets of the W r est Coast Steamship and Trading Co. for £SOO with the object of converting this structure into a holding shed, hut this could not be done except at considerable expense. The Board decided to adopt a comprehensive scheme and extend the wharf along the site once occupied by Messrs Levin and Co. Ltd’s buildings, which were destroyed by fire. The site provided ample building space and accommodation for steamers. The question arose, however, as to whether the Mana-watu-Oroua River Board’s proposed cuts would lessen the depth of the river at the wharf. This contingency was a factor in prejudicing Messrs Levin and Co. from re-erecting their buildings on the site. The advis-
ability of shifting the wharf to the Heads was also discussed by., the Board. However, the Board are now apparently convinced that tie cuts, if put through, will not interfere with the fairway. An architect. was appointed to prepare plans and estimate for the proposed wharf extension and necessarv buildings, and tenders were called for the work, which' latter, however, were greatly in excess of the estimates. The quotation of the eleven who tendered were considered, and certain modifications suggested. The •matter was held over till last Saturday, when a special meeting of the Board was held, at Palmerston N, to definitely decide what was to be done. There were present: Messrs J. Linklater, M.P. (chairman), J. A. Nash, M.P., Holben, Clapham, Chrystall and Signal. It was decided that the chairman and architect confer with Messrs Higgins and Arcus Bros, re their tender concerning the substitution of certain timbers and if agreed upon to close with them. The conference was mutually satisfactory and the Board has accepted the tender at £4,226. The new wharf when completed, will he 24 feet by 80 feet, and the wharf-shed 122 feet by 64 feet. The work will be commenced at an early date.
