THE LEVIN-MARTON DEVIATION.

(To The Editor.) Sir, —The electors of this district, especially the bhsiness people, are disappointed at the attitude of then 1 Member in failing to raise his voice in t he House in support of the LevinMarton deviation when the Government's railway scheme was presented to the House last week. Mr Laiklater had a splendid opportunity of helping this district when Mr Field, the Member for Otaki, gave the lead in favour of the LevinMart on deviation, but he allowed it to slip by, without a word of pro-' test, with the result, that he Government has adopted the PalmnTston N. deviation and left this, district lamenting. Why this attitude of silence on the part of our member? Is it because he is more interested in Palmerston N. than in this district which he represents, including Foxton and Levin, or is it because he is just a pawn in Mr Massey’s political game and lias to do as he is told b.V Mr Massey and Mr Nash to benefit Palmerston N., even at the sacritiee of Jiis own electorate? The Levin-Marton deviation is a matter not only of local interest, blit of great national importance, having regard to the tremendous saving of cost and of travelling time, and perhaps the people wifi now awake to the fact that the country will not liave a satisfactory railway system tili it has a change of Government. It- is true that your leading article of Saturday referred to this; matter, but it was so half-hearted and luke-warm that it sounded more like an apology for Mr Massey and Mr Linklater. Why not take off: the gloves and hit out from the shoulder for your own district? Palmer; ston N. is.drawing too -much from us already and that game must be stopped if Fox ton is to prosper.—-I um, etc. , - £. h. holungh- •
