TREE PLANTING AND FLOOD PROTECTION.
* At Wednesday’s meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board the engineer (Mr Hay) read to the Board, a comprehensive report by Mr Page, State Fbrest Department extension officer, on the best method Gf tree planting to protect the river channel and the Board’s work along its course. The report said that as the Board’s work would extend in perpetuity it would be wiser for it to purchase land for tree planting block areas along the river rather than to depend upon a tenure agreement with settlers. Planted areas should be worth £SOO to £750 in 30 years. The engineer commented that the tree planting project in conjunction with the board’s flood control work would necessitate the acquisition or control of eight acres of land along a mile of the river. Mr Seifert stressed the value of timber supplies such as could be obtained by, planting as suggested. That, he said, had been proved in the case of other boards.
