WHITEBAIT POACHING.
MOUNTED SCOUT OUTWITTED BY LOCAL POLICE.
The temptation to take whitebait from a protected stream at tlie seaside is too strong for certain individuals, despite convictions and fines. The lit tie lish travel up this stream to the lakes in shoals and with their value at anything from 2/6 to 4/per lb. payable quantities are qniekI-, captured by those who care to take the risk.
Constables Owen and Ryan decided yesterday morning to pay another surprise visit to the sanctuary arid carefully planned their campaign, which would have done credit tu the secret service during the On-nl War. When some distance from the trickling stream, they wormed their way between the sand dunes. Through field glasses they espied a. scout who dismounted from his steed on lan eminence, and (-ruefully scanned the countryside. The method the sleuths adopted to escape notice and proceed were novel and stealthy. There was an open space beteeon themselves .-■rid the creek, however, and they decided fo break cover and rush it. Breaking into the open, the scout observed them and his yells and gesticulations were awe-inspiring but the alarm was too late and a capture of the illicit fisherman and much bait resulted. The scoop was successful and the sequel will be unfolded before the magistrate.
