CORRESPONDENCE.

(To The Editor). Sir. —May I encroach on your space to refer to the Council’s che-ese-paring policy and antiquated outlook in regard to the little grass plot which surrounds the memorial to Foxton’s brave sons. In my opinion, sir, the chain enclosure is neither ornamental, necessary, nor iu keeping with the excellent work' done by the Council on the reserve which forms the background to the plot. It does not require much imagination to picture the improvement to the whole appearance of the main thoroughfare that the removal of such an unsightly structure would effect. It is unfortunate, sir, that the artistic temperament is lacking in some of those gentlemen whose aim it should he to make our town attractive, but who appear to allow the cow yard environment to dominate their outlook in public affairs. This is made manifest by the statement of one who lias visited “a good few other places some of which were bigger than Foxton and a number of them had post and rail fences” and if the fence was removed from the little grass plot it'would become “another grazing paddock.” Another wiseacre opined that if the fence was removed people would “park their drays and horses there and hitch old ‘Blossom’ to the monument." Such arguments are perfectly ludicrous to intelligent people. Any money expended upon (w improved environment reflects an enlightened community. T hope, sir, that the Chamber of Commerce will not allow the rejection of their suggestion to dishearten them in their efforts to improve the town. Thanking you, in anticipation, CITIZEN.
