MESSAGE FROM ILL-FATED RIPPLE.
BELIEVED TO BE A HOAX. Wairoa, September 3. Captain Knight, the harbourmaster, this morning found on the beaeh at Wairoa Heads what is considered to be a genuine message from the ill-fated steamer Ripple, l! was contained in a four-pound tin with a (dose-fitting lid. On tlie lid were scratched in large letters the words: “Look inside.” The letters are somewhat rusty and the tin had evidently been in the water for some time. On opening it Captain Knight found a wet advertising leaflet. After crying this he made out the words: “In boat with sail; sinking.—Ripple.” The rest of the message was undecipherable. It was written in a scrawling hand. The message is being sent to the Richardson Company, Napier. Captain Knight believes it to be gen nine. Napier, Last Night. The tin with the message allegedly from the 'Ripple, which was picked up on the Wairoa beach, has reached here and is considered to be undoubted]v a hoa.v.
