MAORI STONE PESTLE.
RELIC OF PAST AGE DISCOVERED IN OLD PA.
The engineer of the Whangarei Harbour Board, Mr W. M. Fraser, has received from Mr Nie! Mackenzie, of North River, Wnipu. a stone pestle weighing about (libs, li is 1 Din, in length and fashioned from a river boulder. Air Mackenzie found tin l relic on top of an old pa between Wnipu and Ruakaka. The engineer says the pestle was used for grinding kokowni (rod ochre) and fern root long before the advent of the pakelia. The specimen is a fine one and symmetrical in shape. In the old days Wnipu was what might he termed a buffer area being situated between two Irihes, (he Ngnpuhi whose territory was bounded by the Whangarei Harbour, and the Ngatiwhatna. who occupied from Waitcmnta Harbour to Mangawai. The territory between the latter place and Whangarei Harbour was mostly occupied lo fugitives.
Some great tights have taken place in the Wnipu area and many valuable and interesting relies.have been found in the vicinity.
