4. CHINA V. CANTERBURY. CHINESE LEAVE FIELD. DF.MOXSTR A TTON A GAINST REFEREE.
Canterbury bear China at Christchurch on Saturday by three goals to two in the presence of about ten thousand spectators. The game was fairly even, hut the combination of the local team avos superior to that of the visitors. The latter were often nut of position. Alorric Friekleton, and Ties scored for Canterbury. while Chang notched both for Chinn, one being from a free kick. The goal scored by Tics which proved the winning one, caused a demonstration against the referee who did not notice that he aa\<is offsh]e. Tl also annoyed two members of the Chinese team, Chang and Wang,-who left the field, hut resumed their places a feAv minutes later. At the time the ineident occurred, China had not scored. Thereafter the crowd on the embankment made ijself facetious at the referee’s expense. After the match there was a demonstration against the referee. When the Chinese players hoarded the char-a-banc to return to their hotel, the crowd persistently hooted the referee and cheered the visitors. Sympathy was clearly with the visitors, and the police'had to keep I he noisiest section of the crowd at bav.
As the outcome of a disputed goal on Saturday Aceek, the match between Dawbers and R.S.A. for the Soccer knock-out competition, Avas played at Palmerston N. on Saturday, the game resulting in a Avin for the former by three goals to one. On the previous occasion, the match was drawn, DaAvbers’ goal being disputed. *’
