Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 1924. THE COUNCIL'S REMITS.
THE Eoxton Borough Council, at its last meeting', decided to forward two remits for consideration by the Municipal Conference. One remit, that Councils instead of the burgesses should elect the Mayor or Chairman, has already been debated at previous conferences and is supported by most of the municipalities throughout the Dominion. A separate election for the Mayoralty, apart from the expense, can ses a conflict of opinion on municipal administration, which could otherwise be avoided. The old idea of the “Chief Magistrate” is a misnomer. The second remit, urging a reduction to municipalities and an increase to lire insurance companies, in regard to Eire Board administration, should lickle the cars of the conference as eminating from Eoxton, which will be.debtor to the insurance companies for many years to come. In any case, the remit savours of I lie dog in the manger and we might add that had it not been for the constitution of a local tire hoard or the establishment, at great cost to the ratepayers of a municipal brigade, insurance companies would have refused local tire risks. Apart from the local aspect, we believe the conference will endorse the present equitable basis. If the Council had given a little more consideration to the economic side of the subject, we believe the remit would not. have been sanctioned.
