MOTOR FATALITY.
WOMAN KILLED, ANOTHER
BADLY INJURED,
Stanton Hill, Pohangiua was the scene of a shocking motor fatality yesterday, when a ear containing two women dropped thirty feet over the bank, one being killed and the other badlv injured. The former was Mrs Hugh Lucas, of Pohangiua and the latter Mrs J. Wells, also of Pohangiua. The accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. when Mrs Wells was hurst. When half-way up Stanton Hill, the car .rounded a curve and ran into some loose earth which had been thrown on to the centre of the road. The car skidded and fell over the bank, dropping some thirty feet and overturning. Mrs Lucas was killed instantly, but Mrs Wells was able to extricate herself, and despite her severe injuries, contrived by extraordinary pluck to reach the homestead of Mr J. Stanton, about five or six chains distant. Mr Stanton, with a surfaceman engaged in road work, immediately set out and upon reaching the car, extricated the deceased lady.
Mrs Wells was removed to the Palmerston North Hospital. Her injuries are to the head and chest, several ribs being fractured. The late Mi’s Lucas, besides her husband, leaves a son and daughter of 18 and 21 years respectively.
