MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING.
The -Manawatu County Council met at'Sanson on Tuesday Cr H. H. Hunt presiding. There were also present: Crs. ff. Fagan. Jas. McKelvie. Wf‘E'.' Rarber, and S. Penny.
Tfi ion with the Drivers’ UriiSn* wages dispute, a letter was received from the Foxton Borough Council, seeking the Council’s cooperation Both Councils had been cited in the dispute and the Manawatu County had referred the mnttef ~to the'Counties’ Association.— The Council agreed that as the Counties’ Association was watching the position, no further action was necessary.
The metal carting contracts in the name of K. Easton were transferred to D. Y. .Tessop.
Tn regard to financing the upkeep of the main highways, the Horowhenua County Council wrote seeking the Council’s co-operation in requesting the Government to raise loans for lending to local bodies interested in main highways. The Council decided to co-operate as requested. The Foxlou Borough Council wrote asking if the Council would contribute half the cost of improving Union street, which is a boundary road. The total cost of the work was estimated to he about £l4.—lt was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Cr. Barber and the engineer to arrange. The annual report of the chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board was read. Discussion on the matter was held over until the next meeting of the Council. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer reported as follows on the work done in the ridings during the past month : Awaliou.—The contractor for supplying and delivering the metal along the top end of Foxton-Shan-r.on road had delivered a little over 100 yards during the past month, end W. Walker had delivered about 160 yards at Foxton end of the same road. Several trucks of metal were yet required to .put this road in order.
Stone crusher. —During the month of July. 1,110 cubic yards of metal was crushed, being the best working month of the season. It had now been decided to stop crushing operations and proceed with the erection and ..extension of the hopper for next season’s crushing.
TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S RE PORT.
The traffic inspector reported that there had been an increase of slock on road during the past week, no doubt owing, to the shortage of feed. Several of the offenders had been prosecuted, and had been fined various amouuts ranging from 5/to 40/-. Two eases were dealt with against motorists at Bulls Court bn-'Sat-urday; one',for, 'speeding Sind the other for driving round the 'corner of Sandon-Foxton road in a manner dangerous to the public. Each was fined 20/- and costs. Since last council day the sum of £lO/Iss. had been indicted against offenders for breaches of the by-laws. The dog registration fees collected to date amounted to £B4. THE TRAMWAY. The tramway manager reported that the chief items of traffic for the past month were: Minerals, lG9i tons - , manure, 45 tons; merchandise, 77 £ tons; metal, 1110 cubic yard's; timber, 35,700 sup. feet; eggs, 125 crates. Fares amounted to £1 19/8. The accounts showed a debit of £ll7 9/7 for the month’s working. GENERAL. X .A slaughterhouse license was granted A. 0. Oliver. The council considered the question of the purchase of an additional motor truck and after witnessing some further demonstrations, held the matter over. The council interviewed at length in committee the representatives of the firm wfiiofi supplied a stone- ' crushing plant concerning payment for it, and details of the agreement relative to its purchase some two year's ago. A mutual arrangement was arrived at. The county clerk furnished a report on a visit to the silver pine for est and saw-iniliing plant at Pokako on the Alain Trunk line where the county is securing railway sleepers and transmission line poles!
