SCHOOL FOOTBALI
FOXTON WINS AUSTIN BANNER BY BIG MARGIN.
The match on Saturday between the Levin District High School primary team and the Foxton State school fifteen created considerable interest by reason of the expected closeness of the contest. Although Levin is a large school it does no! follow that football superiority should he presumed.
The forward division were evenly matched and no serious fault could be found with the exhibition given by either combination. The more weighty Foxton backs attacked strongly. The first half of the game ended in Foxton having obtained a lead by 20. points to 3. In the second spoil Levin scored 8 points and Foxton added another 3 points. Ball (Foxton) gave a very attractive display in the back division, some of'this player’s movements being worthy of an embryo “corkscrew" hunter. Several of the hoys played with their hoots off.
Foxton won the toss.and Stevenson, the captain, elected to play with the wind. Although the Levin lmys apparently possessed the preponderance in weighf, the Foxton team undoubtedly possessed superiority in speed by the presence of Rankin and Stevenson.• who figured prominently throughout. From the cutset the Foxton forwards pressed hard: but both sides fought hard for possession of the hall and in the scrimmage many determined struggles took place. There was not a dull moment throughout the game, the tackling on both sides being deadly and every inch of ground was contested for by tactics which would have done credit to many a senior team. If it were visible for i.yerv senior match to be played in the same clean spirit that--charac-terised ibis display the future petition of the Rugby game in New Zealand would he assured. That Foxton put Ul) such a high score was die to the execellent footwork and combination that existed among the forwards, .and to the efforts of Rankin. Stevenson and Ball, who
■>rasped opportunities and fought herd to carry the leather over the line. On many occasions during the present .season, the brilliant play of These boys has. bwn favourably .s,unlimited upon; it is therefore
; ,Idnod tliat they should be given a . huuec of proving their mettle in the trial matches for the choice of representatives. While great credit is due to the whole team for their line performance, Rankin and Stevenson are to he congratulated on (heir tireless ‘assiduity in organising formidable forward rushes. Mr Kibblewhite welcomed the guests on behalf of,.the staff and scholars, and handed over the Austin Banner, congratulating the lorn! team on their fine performance. Mr Davidson replied, addressing- tlie boys, and stressed the fact that though they should endeavour at all times to play to win, they should remember that (hey should be firstly sportsmen and secondly winners. He appreciated thoroughly the spirit in which the Levin boys had accepted their defeat and opined that both victory and defeat should be received similarly. The pleasant, function concluded with both teams giving three hearty cheers for their opponents.
The Austin Banner was formally handed over at a re-union held in ihe school, when the teams were hospitably entertained by several ladies, and girl scholars. The change of huhlership will act as a distinct stimulant to school football. Mi- Romeo Kingi acted as referee. The headmaster (Mr R. Davidson) on behalf of the team extends his thanks to Messrs Stevenson, Dela ny, Alexander and Dunn for their kind assistance tend loyal support.
Practices for the Fourths will be held ' to-night, Thursday aud Friday nights of this week. All players must attend or otherwise they are likely to lose their places iu the team.
