CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Council oft;the local Chamber of Commerce 'was held on Thursday eveningl. The president, Mr D. Christie, presided over a good attendance. LEVIN-MARTON RAILWAY DEVIATION. Correspondence was received from the Foxton Borough Cohncil, Manawatu County Council, Levin Chamber of Commerce, Marton Borough .Council and Horowhenua County Council re the proposal to take a space in the Christmas number of the Auckland Weekly, explanatory of the linking up of the Main Trunk line between Marton and Levin. The replies, on the. whole, were favourable but further information was sought as to details. During a discussion it was suggested that the league, set up for the purpose, should relieve the local chamber of such detail work, but it was pointed out that the league would not. be summoned until the Minister’s railway policy was submitted. It was decided to communicate with Mr W. H. Field, M.P., and obtain from him information re approximate capital cost of construction of the link and- the saving in running cost on the WellingtonAuckland trip. These figures to be circulated to the local, bodies interested.
It was also decided to apply to the league secretary (Mr Drew) for copies of the plan of the connecting link.
A letter was received from the Minister of Railways setting out the scope of the commission set Up to enquire into the system and general administration of the railways. It was pointed out. that the commission would not touch on railway const fuel ion. ’ SOIMER TIME BILL. A communication was received from the Wellington Chamber re the Summer Time Bill now’ before the House. —-Resolved to support .same and the action of the president in acquainting the member for the district to this effect was endorsed. BOROUGH IMPROVEMENTS. Correspondence was read from the Borough Council setting out that effect bad been given, to certain recommendations forwarded by the Chamber which drew forth favourable comment from members. CONFERENCE. A communication was received from the N.Z. Association notifying that the annual conference will he held at Wanganui on November 19th and 20th, and'asking that remits be forwarded not later than September 20th. —Remits to be considered at next meeting. DAIRY FACTORY PROPOSAL. The secretary reported that in connection with the proposal to establish a dairy Jfactory at! Foxton, that a dominion firm had consented to finance same. During a discussion on the proposal it was pointed out that another firm had offered to start operalions in Foxton and to guarantee suppliers the same price for butter fat as that paid by the Shannon Company provided a guarantee of 1,500 cows was forthcoming. It was pointed out that without a' proper canvass being made 1,200 cows were guaranteed. It was resolved that the firm be written to asking what preliminary steps should be taken to set the matter afoot. TELEPHONES. Resolved to make enquiry re increasing district telephone connee--tions. GENERAL.
It was decided to co-operate in Arbor Day work. Messrs Winstanley and Jno. Ross were authorised to sign cheques. AH Winstanley was complimented upon-his enterprise in arranging a visit to Foxton by the Chinese University team. Other- routine' matters were discussed and the meeting rose.
