COLONIAL SUGAR COMPANY.

POSSIBILITY OF CLOSING down. Auckland, .July 22. 'I he possibility of closing the Colonial*Sugar Refining Company’s works at Chelsea is viewed with a god deal of concern by the Auckland Industrial Association, which held a -peeial meeting to consider the mailer. A motion was carried unanimously that the attention of Parliament lie drawn to Ihe serious position that would arise should the company find itself unable to continue ihe refining of sugar in New Zealand through the removal of the present Customs duty on refined sugar. It is probable the future in- (<■ rmit!eiicy of supplies now regularly available would greatly embarrass New Zealand Manufacturers using sugar as it would probably increase the cost of their products |u the company. Attention was also drawn to the fact that some 570 workmen would be deprived of employment by the closing of the works. The Government was urged lo appoint a special Parliamentary Committee to inquire into the position and report forthwith. Mr F. M. Hills was appointed to iepresent. the Association before any commission or committee the Government might set up.
