LATE SIR WALTER BUCHANAN.
Carterton, Tuesday. Although the weather was bitterly cold and stormy, the largest number of people that has ever gat limed in this district assembled i > accord the last honour to a deecased fellow-settler at Clareville cemetery at noon to-day, where the rment of the late Sir Walter Buchanan, K. 8.. M.L.C., took place. A special train from Wellington brought the Prime Minister and other members of Cabinet and members of both Houses of Parliament and prominent Wellington citizens. Immediately following the hear* were the Right Hon. W. F. Massey, Hon. A. D. McLeod, M.P., for Wairnrapn and members of the Cabinet. the Mayors of all the Wairarapa boroughs and chairmen of all the local bodies, together with their Councils, and in the presence of this great concourse of people, the 1 remains of the late Sir Walter Buchanan, who had so strenuously, usefully and gallantly fought the battle of life were laid to rest. The Presbyterian Church funeral service was impressively carried through by the Rev. Q. King, of Lausdowne Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. ,T. Davie, of Knox Church, Masferton. ' PAR-LTAMENT’S TRIBUTE. In the House on Tuesday evening Mr Massey moved that the House should record its high sense of Sir Walter Buchanan’s distinguished services in the legislature and should express its sympathy with his relatives. Mr Massey paid a fine tribute to his old friend, whom he described as a patriot, a great citizen, a benefactor and a man of great vision. He believed the good- lie bad done would live after him aud he trusted that his example would not be lost on the generations -which followed.
Mr Wilford supported the motion and suggested .that a monument should he erected to Sir Walter Buchanan in the Wairarapa. Mr Holland also supported the motion and spoke of: the deceased gentleman as an uncompromising opponent Iml a friendly and courteous gentleman with great human (|iialities. Other speakers were Messrs McLeod, Parr, Sykes, Hunter, Field, and Nosworthy. The House then adjourned out of respect to the memory of the deceased.
