• ♦ —■ —• Yesterday was the 148th anniversary of the signing of the American Declaration of independence. On July 4,477 b, the American colonies declared l heir independence of Great Britain. The genesis of the trouble was a tax imposed on tea by the Home authorities, which the people of Boston keenly resented. They destroyed a cargo of tea which had arrived, and the harbour was closed until the colonists made restitution. This was tit 1774, and hostility broke out between England and America. The war lasted until 1782 when on November 80 of that year Great Britain acknowledged the independence of the United States.
