FOXTON’S TRIUMPH
The signal for a ding-dong battle to take place came when Mr J. MeKnight blew the whistle for the rival elevens’, R.S.A. (Palmerston) and Foxton to line up and draw conclusions on the raeecom’se last Saturday. Upon kicking off Foxton forced the pace, only to he granted an unsuccessful corner. R.S.A. livened up and in consequence two corners followedjn 1 heir favour with no result. Foxton transferred, hut had hard hick round the posts, two moral goals going begging. The visitors speedily transferred play mice more, hoping to penetrate the home team’s defence but were ruled offside. They gained possession once more hut again had hard luck, failing to achieve their objective. They persisted with the indefatigable spirit of the “Tommy” and Davis drew “first blood.” R.S.A. 1, Poxlon nil.
Lusty for points, they returned, but the whistle for off-side prevenl( d a certain goal. Play was carried u|> field and after sundry attacking by both -ides, S. Crowe gave Jamison no hope. R-.S.A. 1, Foxton 1.
R.S.A. worked hard for the deciding point, forcing two corners lor this end but without gaining advantage. Foxton then assumed the aggressive only to lie conceded a l iuitless . orner. They were‘not to he denied . «nd a beautiful centre iioin Wmslanley was headed in by \V. Moiutsey, thus putting Foxton one abend. Foxton 2, R.S.A. 1.
The second spell was to prove a series of attacks by both sides. It opened with R-.S.A. charging down the field and forcing the Foxton defence to concede a corner which was cleaved. Foxton took their turn at attacking hut were ruled off-side. R.S.A. speedily transferred and after a scramble in the home team’s territory were awarded a penalty. The Foxton supporters held Iheir breath as the kick was taken but the leather (lew safely over tlie ba_r. Foxton had no intention of allowing tlie lead to he taken from them and transferred the play, following up with t wo unsuccessful corners. They pressed hut were spoiled by off-side play. R.S.A. did ihe remaining attaekling, pressing , heavily, which speaks well for the Foxton defence when it may he said no points resulted. Even corners had not the desired effect, hut a few minutes before* the finish, Leaver just saved a beautiful shot at the expense of a corner. The visitors were denied, fate seemingly against them. The whistle was blown for time with the scores: Foxton 2, R-.S.A. 1. The visiting team had certainly hard luck throughout the game and deserved more points than they were able to notch. Special- mention must he made of the- pluck of T. West, who played the sedond half with a cut head.
Foxton’.- team played with two i eserves and certainly deserved their win. The team was very fortunate in possessing guild hacks, who saved the play innumerable times.
