RAILWAYS.
STATEMENT BY GEXERALAIAXAGER.
Wellington, Yesterday. The Railway Officers’ Institute conference concluded on Saturday, and a social was held in the evening, presided over by Afr R. AY. AleVillv, general-manager. In the course of his remarks, Afr Robertson, president of the Institute, stated that in his three and a-half years of offien he had always received every, courtesy at the hands of Air AleVilly. cumstances created —he did not create them -Hie Railways performed useful service, in spite of mismanagement. Tn the North Island, where the principal rail way business was, they had a chance to run things,and had paid £6 10/6 per cent. Tu the South Island, with its level roads, much poor country and -parse population, they had been a burden to them, and the Department was not re-pon si hie for the p-ilh-v that decided where the lines -honld be laid down.
