CAVE WHICH SINGS.
Most people have heard of the Whispering 1 Gallery which surrounds the dome of Sr. Paul's Cath-
edral. But few living beyond (lie borders of the Black Country know that a fortune is a wailing 1 in exgrounds of Dudley Castle. The
cave does not sing, any more than the famous gilded gallery whispers, hut by some accident in it" eonsi ruction. the sounds of voices ring round its cavernous walls and become possessed of such sweetness and power as to make the cave a place of enchantment. The tomb of the wife of Sulla, in the Roman Cnmpagnn. will repeat a line of poetry whirh takes two and a half seconds to utter. In a cave in the Pantheon at Rome the visitor, hv only flapping his coat, can create an echo like the report of a big gun; while in the Leaning Tower of Pisa the sound of musical notes, cither sung’ or played on an instrument, are so repeated and amplified that it almost seems ys though an organ " were playing. I enuysoii wrote his famous lyric, "The Splendour Falls." after hearing the famous bugle echo at Killnrnoy. A bugle blast is echoed and reechoed front the hills till it sounds as though a. hundred Imgles were blowing. If tin- famous Menai Su-pcnsion Bridge is taken down, as is possible, to be replaced by something more substantial, not only will a bridge be destroyed but also a famous echo. The sound of a hammer is repeated front each supporting cross beam in the bridge, and finally from the opposite pier. - r >7(i feet away.
