HOROWHENUA POWER BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua Power Board was held in Levin on Tuesday, Mr G s A. Monk (chairman) presiding. Also present were: Messrs A. Brown. A. Ross, W. E. Barber, Kilsb.v, Mathesnn. Gunning, Seifert and Maekny. FOXTON REQUIREMENTS.

The Foxton Borough Council wrote asking for a quotation for installing the necessary fittings and motor complete for the pumping station at Foxton, also for particulars of the Board’s financing scheme.

Mr Ross stated that when the loan for improvements in Foxton was carried tin's was supposed to he provided for, but they now found tlitem--ielves short of money. The Foxton people were nosv asking for the financial assistance of the Board on the terms given to other consumers. —Referred to the Finance Committee.

The residents of the Forton Beach township wrote stating that there were already 42 householders signed up as desiring to have electric light installed and that they expected to get 80 to 100 before the canvass was completed.

The chairman stated (hat this matter was now pi'oceeding very satisfactorily. About 00 consumers would make the proposition a payable one and tlie commencement of the erection of the line was in sight. Mr Ross asked if the Board had the right to rate for street lighting. If this was so he considered that some sreet lights should he included in the scheme.

The chairman explained that the scheme adopted throughout the district was that the rate for lighting should he paid out of general rate. The Board had the right to make a special rate but it was not worthwhile making a special district for such a small area as a township. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer, Mr T. Overton, reported as follows:-* The total consumers in the Board's district signed up to date are as follows: — Lighting ‘ 883 , Ranges '4O Water Heaters .... 47 Milking Motors .... 51 Industrial Moors . 32

No. 2 Wire Gang who are stationed in Foxton borough have completed tlie high tension line from the main sub-station to the borough boundary on the Lady’s Mile road, whilst within the borough they have erected 220 chains of low tension wiring, 27 street lamps, and run service lines to 45 houses. During the month three wiremen were taken from This gang to form portion of another gang for the Otaki district. Tn accordance with instructions given at last Board meeting, I took up the matter of # a.n exhibit at the Palmerston North Show, with the borough council’s electrical engineer, and we have arranged to provide a cooking demonstration during- the afternoon, at an estimated expenditure to this Board of £lO. No suitable space other than that already secured by the Borough Council could he procured for. an electrical exhibit by combined Power Boards, hence the proposal was not pressed forward with engineers to other hoards. Should it he desired, however, that such an exhibit should take place next year, it would be necessary to hook a space at. an early date.

With regard to temporary streetlighting at Shannon, I have to say that in company with Messrs W. E. Barber and Seifert an agreement was made on behalf of the Board, with the Mayor and* representatives of the borough council, to charge for street lighting at the rate of £4 15/- per lamp per year for supply until 11.30 p.m.

In moving the adoption of the engineer’s report the chairman stated that under the circumstances, the arrangements made for a cookery demonstration-.were very satisfactory. Mr Gunning said that this demonstration was one of great importance to housewives and should he given full publicity. He was sure that, a great many women would visit the demonstration if they knew it was being held. The chairman stated that as soon as the power became available the Board would have to employ a demonstrator to give demonstrations in the different townships throughout the district. It had been suggested that one should be obtained for Shannon now but that'would be unsatisfactory as the work in one township would be only for a few days. Once the Board engaged a demonstrator it would be desirable that the employment should be continuous until the whole of the district had been done.

The engineer’s report was adopted.
