THE BURDEN OF TAXATION.
• (To The Editor.) Sir, —The Welfare League is again concerned about the burden of taxation which wealthy people are expected to bear —but who, I ask, is better able to bear it"? Does the Welfare League, or rather the Tory League, for that is what- it is, think the burden should be thrown upon the worker, who is already overburdened by the high cost, of living through taxation on the necessaries of life and by the monopolies and profiteering of the wealthy people whom (he Tories propose to relieve of taxation? The Welfare League’s argument is that if the wealthy were relieved of taxation they would use the money so saved in industries —but would they”? No, we,know what they would do—they would do what they have always done —spend the money in further luxuries aud extravagance to gratify their own selfishness. No, Mr Welfare League, the people have been fooled long enough by \our wealthy friends, and will not trust them. The fat man must carry the burden of taxation, which, to him, is no burden at all, aud must give the honest worker and his children a chance to live in reasonable comfort. — 1 am etc., P. L.
