THE MAIN HIGHWAY.

WHAT HAS FOXTON DONE?

' ' (To the Editor.) Sir, —It is stated tligt the Government has decided to divert the new Main Highway from Wellington to Palmerston North by cutting out Foxton, en route, thereby directing to Palmerston North traffic and trade which would otherwise come here, leaving the Mamvwatu district the burden of carrying the heavy traffic over an old main road already worn out, while Palmerstou N. gets the benefit of the fast traffic and profitable trade which will travel, en route, over the new Main Highway. Why is Foxton victimised by the Government in this way? Is it not enough that the Government has discouraged the development of the Foxton shipping port by withholding assistance to the proposed river cut, for the sake of retaining the trade on its paltry railway, without further injuring this district by diverting the Main Highway which everyone. expected would puss through litre which is its natural aXtl most convenient direction.

Js it that the Manawatu district has so long been represented by a Tory member that perhaps Air Massey thinks lie can treat it as he pleases without fear, or is it that the united influence of the present Palmerston N. and Manawatu members (both Palmerston N. men) is responsible for Foxton being victimised in favour of Palmerston N"? Surely it. is time that the electors of Manawatu woke up to the fact that they will never get fair treatment from the Massey Government while this state of things lasts. The remedy is for the opposition parties to unite and secure the representation ol' this district by a member whose interests are in the Mauawatu district and whose business it will be to see that the’ Manawatu district gets the fair treatment that has been so long withheld. — I am, etc., P. L. HOLDINGS. [WE refer our correspondent to our article on this subject- appearing elsewhere in this issue.—Ed. H.j
