THE HEMP MARKET

MAY GRADING RETURNS

The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper-tow and stripperslips, for the month of May, have been isstied by the Department, of Agriculture as follows: — Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 6,725 as compared with 4,902 for the corresponding month last year, an increase of 1,823 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st May, 1924, 65,882 bales were graded as against 59,161 for the previous 12 months, an increase of 6,721 bales. Tow. —During the month 1,432 bales were graded as against 1,159 bales in May, 1923, an increase of 273 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st May, 1924, “15,703 bales were graded as compared with 15,641 for the previous 12 months l , an increase of 62 bales. Stripper-tow. —During the month 106 bales were graded as against, nil in 1923. Stripper-Slips.—s4 bales were graded as compared with 19 bales in May, 1923, an increase of 35 bales. The following shows the detailed particulars of the hemp graded:—

Forty-seven bales at Auckland 29 at Foxton, 61 at Wellington, and seven at Blenheim were rejected and four bales at Auckland and 39 at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Fine, nil (13), good fair 927 (881), high fair 3,985 (2.703), fair 1,368 (958), common 258 (263), rejected 144 (84), condemned 43 (nil), a total of 6,725 hales. The number of hales graded at each port was: —Auckland 1,470, Fox lon 1,708, Wairon 254. Wellington 2,236, Pieton 12-1, Blenheim 297, Lyttelton 79, Pt. Chalmers 60, Dunedin 99, Invercargill 34, Bluff 353. The following shows the detailed particulars of the low graded:

Thirtv-one halos at Auckland, 14 nl: Foxton, 27 a! Wellington ami two at Blenheim were condemned. The following shows the number of hales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last vear being give'll in parenthesis:— First grade 308 (380), 2nd grade 818 (041). 3rd grade 141 (81), condemned 74 (57). The number of bales graded at each port was Auckland 250, Foxton 291, Wairoa 54, Wellington 400, Picton 48, Blenheim 72, Lyttelton 8, Pt. Chalmers 18, Dunedin 20, Bluff 199. ‘Stripper-tow: —Thirty bales at Foxton, 22 at Wairoa and 48 at Wellington were graded 2nd grade, and six bales at Wellington 3rd grade. , Stripper-slips—Four bales at Auckland and 15 bales at Bluff were graded Ist grade and 20 bales at Foxton, two at Lyttelton and 13 at Bluff 2nd grade.
