BLAZE AT INVERCARGILL
OIL STORE AND CONTENTS
DESTROYED,
Invercargill Last Night. Invercargill to-day witnessed an awe-inspiring spectacle when the British Imperial Oil Company’s (N.Z.) big oil store went up in smoke. There were at least 20000 cases of oil stored in the building. Wheu the last eases were being stored awav the fire was discovered in the front of the building and it spread with such appalling rapidity that nothing could be done to save it. An employee named Smith discovered the place to be on fire and pluekily tried to put it out, but so rapid was the spread of the flames that lie was burni about Hie arms and oho=4 and had to be taken to hospital for treatment, where inquiry lute lasi night, elicited the information Iha I he was progressing favonrablv.
The building and contents arc covered by an open policy of insurance, lint the amount of ihe damage covered is not vet known. The cause of tlm outbreak has not yet definitely been determined.
