LEATHER
Mr McMurray lias shown us some leather in the tanning of which ‘artesian water from Foxton was used solely. The water was sent in barrels to Mr E. Ness, of Pahiatua, an expert tanner of many years standing, both in New Zealand and England. Mr Ness says that the Foxton water compares favourably with any water in the Old Country used for tanning purposes, and jud ging by the leather exhibited we can quite believe this for the calf skin tanned as French calf is equal to anything we have seen, being very soft and pliable, yet very strong. There is also a foal skin tanned in show the tannage and colour obinined by using this water, while the boot laces are far and above superior to those we have been iu the habit of using. The leather is hot only a credit to the tanner, but shows we have suitable water in Foxton for the establishment of such ap important industry as tanning. The leather is on view in the window of the Awahou Auctioneering Co.
