MISHAP TO RIVER BOAT
MAILS LOST: PASSENGERS SA FE. Taumimumi, Lust Night. As I lie result of a mishap to the river boat \Vai-iti on the Wanganui river this morning, throe mail bags are missing and eight private lcttoi bags are not yet accounted for. N ; o injury was suffered by those on board, who were landed safely on the verbati k with the aid of a wire hawser and cradle. Another boat was despatched to the scene and brought the passengers back to Taumarunui.
The Wai-iti lies half submerged about thirteen feet from the river bank, bnl clear of the fairway. The damage to the vessel will run into a considerable sum.
The accident was due to the breaking of llio steering gear. When llie vessel struck a submerged rock she buckled in half. The wrecked boat is sixty feet long with a beam •>!.' eight and a half feet.
