(To The Editor). Sir, —In reply to a letter appearing in Saturday’s Herald under the nom de plume of “A Mother in Sympathy” and as I conveyed the unfortunate little child to the hospital, I would like, sir, to clear up any misunderstanding or reflection upon my actions. In any case, sir, I will leave those who know me to judge whether mv actions at any time in eases of sickness-or trouble are or have been heartless. These are the facts in connection with the ease so far as I am concerned: On Tuesday afternoon at about -I o’clock I received a telephone message at mv house from a Maori named Pino. He. asked me whether I would take some one, who was sick, to the Palmerston N. hospital. He at the time gave no further particulars. He then asked me how much it would cost and I told him £2 .10/-. He said alright and I came straight away. On arrival in Main Street 1 was met by Pino and still not knowing what the trouble was. I asked who was going to pay the fare. He said he was and I asked for a guarantee which he gave me on his employer, Mr Bryant. I then proceeded to the house and picked up the child and three women. This was the first I knew of the accident. I had to call at Dr. Wyllie’s residence to get the medical certificate of admission While (here f was asked by Mr Honour, whose boy bad also met with an accident, whether I would lake bis son to the hospital, which T willingly consented to do without making any demand for payment and room was made for the little fellow who I also conveyed. I never refused to make the trip from the time T was rung up and if the faIher had approached me and given me particulars of the case instead nt being approached by an outsider, I lie payment for services would nol have been mentioned. I hope this explanation of the facts will satisfy your correspondent or any others who may have been misinformed. Tn conclusion I may say the parents of the deceased child have my deepest sympathy.—Yours etc. H. COLEY.
