SENSATION IN POLICE COURT

OLD MAN DIES ON HEARING SENTENCE. Wellington, Last Night. A police prosecution iu the Magistrate’s Court to-day had a tragic ending when the defendant collapsed and died after hearing the Magistrate’s decision. The case was one which the police proceeded against Patrick Cavnnagh, a dairyman, over 70 years of age, residing in Kaiwarra, for alleged ill-treatment of a calf. When defendant heard Magistrate Page state that he thought a conviction would have to he entered his head fell forward on to the table at which he was sitting. Defendant was curried out of Court into an adjoining room and Dr Henry was summoned. In about ten minutes’ time Sub-Inspector Cameron informed the Court Unit; defendant had expired.
