MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING.
The Manawatu County Council met on Tuesday, Sir James Wilson presiding. There ■were also present: Crs. H. H. Hunt, J. Boyce, W. E. Barber, S. Penny and J. McKelvie. In regard to the heavy traffic bylaws and the closing of couuty roads against such traffic, the Council decided to suspend the order until May 12. In connection with this matter a letter was received from the Aiauaw atu-Oroua Electric Power Board representing to the Council that the enforcement of the heavy traffic by-laws was going to seriously hinder the work of the Board and requesting the Council to meet it with a view to coming to some understanding. The Council agreed to meet the Board to discuss proposals.
Decided to pay the Feildmg High School Board of Managers a further £IOO next month towards the cost of furnishing the boys’ hostel.
It was decided to take steps to have the roads submitted to the Highways Council as main highways declared main county roads. Dillic ill ties regarding dog registration in a certain area of the county are such that the following resolution was carried: “That as the Maori Council has failed to have dogs owned by natives within the Manawatu County registered, this Council applies for an Urder-in-Council conferring on it the powers und functions of the Maori Council within the county with respect to the registration of dogs.” The following alterations in the rate roll were approved; F. Fanthorpe Lo U. and R. Xhow, lot 7, part 3, section 313 Carnarvon; G. Baii-Guyuier to Smith and Matkeson, section 2UU Rongotea; L. Berry to F. J. Mansell, section 49, Taugnuoana. in connection with the Council’s complaint regarding the admission of visitors to Faimers Lon N. hospital, an intimation was received Horn the Hospital Board that the matter would be tne subject of a special inquiry by tiie executive committee. ENGINEERS REPORT. Carnarvon, Awafiou, and Kawa Kawa Ridings.—A number of teams aud drays were commissioned during the past month on the Foxtonaandon road to repair the damage caused by the heavy traffic during me railwuy strike. If the Council could arrange it, it should retain me dump truck al present in use for another week or ten days to put this road and also the mad between Himatangi aud Kangiotu in order. THE TRAMWAY. The tramway manager reported tUaL me cnief items of traffic during April were; General merchandise id'Si Loirs, minerals aud manure 169 i tons, cheese 6U tons, stock 36 trucks, and metal <lO cubic yards. I luring the railway, strike the tram kepi up its service with Foxton, running both goods and metal. Owing to me shortage of eoai, 16 tons were purchased from the Railway Department at Foxton, at a cost of 04/ - per ton. The engineer also reported that repairs had been carried out along tlie tramway line in various sections. One set of 401 b. points aud crossings was now placed in position at the Whale Line siding, but there remained a good deal of work to be done in the way of coupling with the 281 b. track. Other ridings had aio received attention in regard to roads and culverts. —Adopted.
