LIQUOR AT A BANQUET

Wanganui, Yesterday.. A sequel to a banquet attended by a Minister of the Crown, councillors and notable citizens, given by the Mayor, Mr Gibbons, to celebrate the amalgamation of Gonville and Ca.stlecliff with the Borough of Wanganui, was a charge beard at the Magistrate’s Court today. Thomas H. Nixon, licensee of the Rutland Hotel, was charged with having on 3rd April, at a time when the premises were directed to be closed by (be Licensing Act, allowed liquor, although purchased before the hour of closing, to be, consumed on the premises. Tlie Magistrate, Mr Barton, said he thought that the proper judgment in the case Would be that a conviction must be recorded, but seeing Hint no moral blame was attached to the licensee, no penalty would be imposed. The defendant would be discharged without a penalty.
