Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MAY 1, 1924. STRIKE OFF.
GENERAL relief was expressed throughout the Dominion yesterday when it became known that the A.S. R.S. executive had declared the strike off and ordered the men to return to work pending resumption of negotiations with the Minister. That the precipitate action of the A.S.R.S. was a false move is abundantly evidenced by the lack of public sympathy with the “stand and deliver” attitude of (he. strike leaders when the door was open to more conciliatory methods. The A S.R.S., together with all other associations and industrial unions, have yet to learn that there is a great third party to all disputes which is equally capable of sifting facts and dealing out justice in all disputes. Public opinion in this regrettable hold up was decisively with the Minister and Cabinet who stood firm for conciliation, law and order, despite threats of a great industrial upheaval. Had Cabinet weakened, a victory would Imve been gained by those who favour direct action against the saner methods of concilia!ion and arbitration in the settlement of all disputes. The way is now open for a fair and equitable settlement of the claims of the A.S. R.S.
