SHOOTING SEASON
OPENS TO-DAY DUCKS REPORTED TO BE PLENTIFUL. The game shooting season for the Wellington .district opens to-day, Ist May, and according to the reports received by Mr. C. I. Dasent. secretary of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, there is an abunance of grey duck, English mallard duck, and the shoveller duck, or widgeon, on various lakes and rivers iu this district. The society s rangers report that on some lakes the surface of the water is black with the birds. Mention is made of the Wairarapa Lake and small lakes in the Manawatu and Rangitikie districts. Mr. Dasent explains howevr, that ducks are very cunning, and after the first five or six shots, they go to sea before daylight, and remain near the shore, but out of range. When it is dark the birds return inland to the lake or river water until near daylight. “As far as we know,” remarked Mr. Dasent to-day, “the lakes in our district are as well supplied with ducks as they have ever been.”
The game which may be shot in this district are cock pheasants, veller duck, and black duck. I here hares, California quail, Australian quail, mallard duck, grey duck, shois no limit for imported birds but native birds are limited to twenty per gun per day. The license fee is £l, which gives the right to shoot native and imported game. Holders of the license for this year can shoot goodwit from Ist February 1925 to 31st March, 1925. ■ The prulected birds for this district 'are pigeons, pukeko and black teal. iSu automatic or pumping guns can be used.
