BILLIARDS

FIRE BRIGADES COMPETE FOR COLEY SHIELD.

FOXTON DEFEATS FEILDING

Some time ago Mr Geo. Coley, of Foxton, presented n handsome billiards challenge shield for competition among the Foxton, Palmerston North, Feilding and Levin • Fire Brigades. The donor stipulated that Foxton was to he the first holders of the trophy. The first challenge was received from the Levin Brigade who made an unsuccessful attempt to annex the trophy on Thursday night. The conditions of play were 100 Up, three men aside. The opening challenge game was witnessed by representatives of all the brigades interested.

The following were the results, (Foxton players mentioned first) : T. Carter 101 v. Walls 48, K. Hirini 88 v. Gaskin 110; H. Hamer 101 x‘. Pnwson 39. Totals: Foxton 290, Feilding 197. The highest break was 25, made by Hirini, who takes the medal (donated hv Superintendent Connor, of Levin), which accompanies the shield and is held by the player in the winning team of the challenge game. At the conclusion of the tournament the visitors were entertained at supper by the local brigade at Mr Walls’ tea rooms. Mr Homblow (chairman of the Foxton Fire Board) presided and welcomed the visitors and apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr Geo. Coley, the donor of the shield, who was accorded a hearty round of applause for his generosity and efforts to improve the social welfare of the various brigades. Secretary Hifchins, of the Palmerston North Brigade, spoke on similar lines and congratulated the local bi’igade upon defending the shield. He hoped that the brigades would also engage in friendly rivalry in other branches of sport (applause).

Connor (Levin) endorsed the previous remarks and paid a tribute to the activities of secretary Hitehins to whom credit was due in his efforts to bring the brigades of the district into closer social touch.

Foreman Gaston (Feilding) in a humorous speech, said a hook had been bung in the Feilding station upon which to hang the shield, hut they would console themselves in the meantime by showing the Foxton men a point or two in football when lliey met (laughter). The chairman then handed the shield to Superintendent Hamer in a congratulatory speech also the medal, which were suitably ackr nowledged.

During tbe evening the following leasts were proposed and drunk with musical honours: “The King,” “Visitors," “Foxton Brigade.” “Donors of Shield and Medal,” “Kindred Brigades,” and “The Hostess.” (Mrs Walls). Songs were contributed by Messrs Carter and Hitehins and violin selections by Fireman , Merwood (Feilding). Mr A. Walls presided at. the piano. The gathering closed with the singing of “Anld Long Syne,” and cheers. The next shield challenge will probably come from Levin.
