(Speaking at Winton on Monday night on Empire defence, the Premier expressed the opinion that an eflicient Navy could hold any nation in check until an army was trained. He believed tbe centre of danger was nr the (South Pacific, though there was no probability of war in the near future for many years. America had fortiiied Pearl Harbour, Honolulu, and if it was necessary for America to have a base there then it was necessary for Britain to have Singapore fortified. If war came and we had not a Uavy sufficient to keep away the enemy then God help the Empire.
