FOOTBALL FATALITY. YOUTH DIES FROM INJURIES. Tlie Rughyseasoii 1924 had a tragic beginning for the Oroua Rugby Sj&j-TJniou ,on Saturday, when a ye'ung player aged 17 years, Louis Phillip Allerby, of Colyton. received injuries that quickly proved fatal. The deceased lad is the son of Mr Frank Allerby, settler, of Colytori, and was a member of the team in the match with Cheltenham playep ajt the former township. Towards the end of the game deceased kicked, the ball and played on, shortly afterwards dropping to the ground where he lay unconseioirs. Medical attention ,was summonsed and Dr. Phillips of Feilding, ordered his removal to. the Palmerston N. Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival. , . 1

Deceased suffered very severe internal hemorrhage, resulting from a blow in the side of the chest. It is understood that the injuries were received through severe contact with another player’s knee, but further details were not available. Apparently there was no rough play. In the same game another Colyton player named Cousins, received a badly broken collar-bone and had to receive medical attention from Dr Phillips. Ji:: ~

DEPUTY- SUPERINTENDENT KILLED, OTHERS INJURED. Auckland, Monday. The Devonport fire engine, while travelling to a fire call at seven o’clock last night, collided with a telegraph pole, and Deputy Superintendent Jules le Scelle, who was standing on the footboard, clanging .the gong, was killed instantly. Two firemen, R. Clark and J. Page, and Constable J. Ruave, who was picked up on the way, were hurled to the ground and more or less seriously injured. They ore suffering from concussion and shock. The motor engine was severely damaged. The accident was caused through a skid on the wet roadway. The smaller engine, following close behind, nearly ran over-the prostrate men in the darkness.
