FLAXMILLERS’ GRIEVANCES.

METHODS OF GRADING.

Grievances against the Department of Agriculture in regal'd to the grading of their product at Auckland were uufoided by a deputation from the Northern Flaxmiilers’ Association winch wailed upon Mr M. J. Savage, M.l’., last week. The dissatisfaction of the nailers concerns in the Inst place, the method of appointment of the present chief hemp grader for the Dominion and more particularly the way in wfhich Lire local grading in Auckland is earned on.

Mr E. L. Broad, of Tauranga, who was the principal spokesman of the deputation, expressed dissatisfaction with the method followed in the selection of the chief grader. With regard to the grading at Auckland, he said no end of complaints had been made as to the grading assigned to local shipments of hemp, and when ihe owners contested the assessments of quality given to them, the propriety of the challenges had been acknowledged by alteration of the grading in accordance with their protests, in these circumstances, the deputation asked Mr Savage for auvice as to the best course to be taken to ensure that the trade would have a square deal from the department. Correspondence which had been exchanged with the department on the point was handed to Mr Savage, who promised that, as far as lay in his power, he would see that a fail' course was insisted upon. With this view he undertook to place himself in communication with the Minister in charge of the department. Failing the receipt of satisfaction in that quarter, the only course would be to bring’ the matter before the House.
