The emerald still reign- supreme over the kingdom of jewels, and there is no reason to fear it will soon he dethroned.
The emerald possesses a wonrotis limpid heouty. a sheen as of soft velvety moss, and a depth and richness which Inre and enchant.
The present position of the emerald in the realm of jewellery, apart from its favouritism with Princess Mary, and the fact that green Inis recently been so f’a-h----onable, is due to its great value. In its large sizes the emerald is more costly than tile diamond, and more difficult to obtain, and when these conditions exist there is reason enough for its enthronement. Yet the experts are loth to ascribe pre-eminence to any precious stone. They regard each stone as a piece of incomplete beauty, and find their highest attainment in perfecting, supplementing. and combining them. Personal fasfe some contend, still carries as much weight as a pass-fashion. Emeralds and sapphires attract mostly blondes: (he brunettes prefer diamonds and sapphires. In ancient days the emerald was as highly esteemed as now. When [.nonlies landed at Alexandria, Ptolemy presented hint with a magnificent gold set emerald engraven with his portrait and the shortsighted Nero, it is s;iid, u~ed an emerald through which to gaze on the fighting gladiators of flic Colosseum.
