Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 1924. MATERNITY HOSPITAL.

SO that the Palmerston North Hospital should he complete in every detail, the Board decided some years ago to add a maternity ward to the. institution. This would also provide an opportunity for training maternity nurses. Objection was raised to the ward being in the hospital block. To get over this objection, the Board acquired several acres of land adjoining the hospital upon which to erect the maternity ward and £5,000 was allocated for the erection of the building. Again ex ception was taken by petition to the maternity ward being on the hospital grounds in favour of a town site. Against the latter proposal the Board objected on the grounds of added administrative costs but suggested that a St. Helen’s Hosjiital be founded. Public subscriptions were gathered to this end, but the organisers of the movement could not agree as to the building. In the meantime the Health Department is endeavouring to transfer the St. Helen’s hospitals to Hospital Boards. At this week’s Hospital Board meeting Mr J. A. Nash, M.P. said the Government was willing to build and equip a St. Helen’s maternity home in Palmerston North, at a cost not exceeding £10,090, and when completed, hand it over us a free gift to the Board. In view of this, he moved: “Tha t the Board affirms the principle that a St. Helen’s Home is desirable in this hospital district, and that, providing the Government will establish and equip a home in Palmerston North at a cost not exceeding £IO,OOO, and that it is a free gift to the Board, that the offer be accepted.” After discussion, tho subject was deferred to the next meeting, when it is possible that the Board will adhere to its original decision as to site.
