SWIMMING.

Local representatives again made a successful trip to Levin on Wednesday afternoon when they attended that Club’s swimming carnival. The afternoon was cold with a chilly breeze blowing and although the water was fairly warm, competitors felt the discomfort of standing about between races.

The big race of the day was the .Mnnawafu Open Handicap, which bad attracted an entry of 12, Palmerston North being represented by six swimmers and Foxton and Levin by three each. Harrison, the scratch man, was an easy favourite on his late performances in Levin and Palmerston 'North, and ably sustained his reputation, winning the final in the actual time of tiS seconds, which under the conditions must be looked upon as very creditable. Harrison was conceding 18 seconds and in his heat had the length of the bath to make up, when he started. Swimming with a powerful crawl, he speedily overhauled the limit men. with whom lie was level half way home in the last hrp. winning amidst great applause by two feet. In the liiial the limit man bad an even greater start, being two yards back on the second lap, but none of the other men could stay the distance at the pace that was set. Harrison had over half a length to make up when he started the third lap, but left tbe opposition standing still in the race for home, w inning e orn for t a Idy. The results arc: —

There have been frequent complaints) says the Auckland ‘‘Star”) ns to the manner in which some motorists whirl through Filer-lie without regard to the safely of pedestrians, and an incident which occurred on Saturday has excited considerable indignation among local residents. Mr. .). .Johnston was out walking with a valuable fox terrior dog at about 11 o’clock, when his attention was directed to a grey-painted motor-ear by the speed at which it was racing in the direction of Petnrose. When the car had swept past, he looked round and saw his dog lying crushed and dead on the roadway. Apart front the value of the animal, it was a great pet in the household of the owner, and well liked by the little community of Panmure Road, where it was quite a familiar sight. So fast was the ear travelling that there was no time for Mr Johnston to take its number.
