EXPLOSION IN QUARRY.

ONE MAN RECEIVES FATAL INJURIES. Dunedin, Yesterday. As a result of an explosion in a quarry at the Milburn Lime and Cement Company’s kilns at Dunbaek to-day, David McMillan, single, believed to reside at Waikouaiti, died from injuries received. Ernest Cox, aged 25, married but without family, residing at Dunbaek, sustained serious injuries to the head and is dangerously ill. William Mclntosh, aged 22, single, residing at Dunbaek suffered injuries to the head and a fractured leg. The men were engaged in blasting schist in order to get at the beds of limestone and the manager of the kiln, who was in charge of the operations gave a warning to get into safety, which they did. However, for some inexplicable reason, McMillan, Cox and Mclntosh left the safety zone in order to change their positions, and while they were passing the charge exploded, and they were struck by flying rock. Cox and Mclntosh were conveyed to Dunedin hospital, but McMillan died before the arrival of the ambulance from Dunedin. The Superintendent of Police has received advice from the Cromwell police, that Robert Thompson, aged 55, a miner, was found killed, supposedly by lire damp in Scott’s pit to-day. Dunedin, March 12. William Ernest Cox died in hospital this morning.
