BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last night. WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT.

The water and drainage engineer reported as follows: — During the month tive householders have been connected with the water supply and one sewer connection installed. Willows have been planted along the river foreshore by the pipe line; water meters have also been installed and water has been let out of the dead ends of the water mains. Maintenance cost: Coal 2 tons 4qr>., £6 6/4, oil, 24 gallons, 13/-, wages £8 14/3, total £ls 13/7. Eighty-two hours were spent pumping water at a cost of 44d per 1,000 gallons, 842,000 gallons being pumped. Alaintenance, at waterworks: £6 7/5, do., drainage, £7 Is .lid; number of hours spent on outside employment, 264, producing £3 12/6. —Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman reported on the following works : —Carting metal and patching ruts on the Sandon Rd., Ladies’ Aide, and Park and Rnssell Sts., and Ravensworth Place. Repairing fence Victoria Park, weeding water tables and footpaths in Liddell St., and Ravensworth Place; grubbing noxious weeds at the Cemetery; cleaning Awalnui, Johnston St., and Avenue Rd. drains and general maintenance work. Alain St. has been cleaned on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the channels flushed out with water from the mains. The fine screenings ordered from Belmont have not yet come to hand. When they arrive (he tar-sealing in Johnston St. will he given another dressing. That portion of Alain St. between Clyde .-iiicl Wharf Sts. is beginning to show iigns of wear, particularly on the restern side and 1 think it would be advisable to give this another dres•ung. It is two years since this portion was done. The staff is at present proceeding with the annual drain clearing. —Adopted. GAS MANAGER'S REPORT. The gas manager reported as follows: —During the month the apparatus has been working in very satisfactory order. The ventilator on the storehouse has been recovered. One service has been fitted at Mr Speirs’ house, Cook Street, also the service at Mr Walker’s house was rusted through and two new lengths of pipe have been put in.— Adopted. RESIGNATION. Air Leaver, gas works stoker, tendered his resignation, owing to ill health. —Accepted with regret. Decided to call applications immediately to till the position. PUBLIC BENEFACTOR. Decided that the Council desires to place on record its sincere appreciation of the dfsire of the late Air Walter Bock to render monetary benefit to the town from his estate, and also to tender thanks on behalf of the citizens to Air William Bock and relatives for their spontaneous generosity in donating the substantial sum of £I,(JOU to the various institutions in the town. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From the gas manager stating that, as requested by the Council, he sent two meters to Wellington to be tested and both were returned, having been found to be in quite satisfactory working order. The test cost the Council 15/-. —Decided that in any future complaints the consumer deposit 10/- wth the Town Clerk, which amount will be,forfeited should the meter be found to be registering correctly. A letter re swimming baths, was received from Mr R. Edwards, but was held over for discussion until the next meeting. A letter from the Taihape Borough Council re Land profit was read. It was decided that this Council’s reply to the resolution suggested in the letter re land profits be an emphatic negative. HIGH SCHOOL FOR FOXTON it was moved by the Alayor, seconded by (Jr. Bryant, that the Council invites the co-operation of the Foxtou School Committee in securing- the necessary information for the Aliuister of Education to support the establishment of a District High School in the borough. TOWN HALL COMMITTEE’S .'REPORT.

The Town Hail Committee submitted the following recommendations : That an order be placed with Messrs lluLcheson and Wilson for a new picture screen as per terms of letter dated 25th February; that the Broadwood piano selected by the Mayor, at a cost of £62 10/be purchased; that an order be placed with Mr Jack for chairs, as per his quotation.—Adopted. GENERAL. An application was received from Mr J. McCoii for a permit to build a wooden residence on the section at the north end of Main St. A discussion arose about the site being within the brick area and iL was dually decided that a committee consisting of the Mayor and Crs. Coley, Walker and Bryant meet and bring down a recommendation lo the next Council meeting. Decided that the lessee be noliiied that unless the three months rent due for the Target Reserve is paid within seven days the Council will proceed to determine the lease.
