CUSTOMS RETURNS AND POPULATION.
INTERESTING STATISTICS. Customs duties collected in New Zealand during ihe quarter ended December 31st total £1,993,137 compared with £1,620,093 for the corresponding period a year ago. The total for the year 1923 was £7187,161, compared with £5,431,402 in 1922. Excise duty collected during the December quarter was £20.1922 as against £194,127 a year ago, and (lie total for 1923 was £7ll- - compared with £679,905 in 1922. The population of the Dominion at the 31st December, according to the Government Statisticairs gazetted estimate, was 1,394,468, made up as follows: —-New Zealand proper (excluding Maoris) 1,289,233, Maoris 53,801; Cook Islands and Niue 13455; Western Samoa 37,990, nett increase during the year in New Zealand proper was 23,836, made up of excess births over deaths 16.468; excess of arrivals over departures 7,368.
