AUSTRALASIAN SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
McDEVITT AGAIN - DEFEATED.
Auckland. Thursday.
The re-row of the race for the Australasian sculling championship between P. Haiulan. the holder and W. McDevitt. the Australian, resulted in a win for the New Zealander by 12 lengths. The course was of three and a-quarter miles, from Bastion Point up the harbour to Princess Wharf, City. The weather was good with a south-easterly breeze. The water, mainly was smooth, with a roughish portion in the centre.
From an even stairt, McDevitt quickly took the lead but was never more than a length ahead. Hannan gradually overhauled his opponent, and at about halfway was on ' level terms. He then steadily drew away, and with nearly a mile to go, was several lengths ahead and with half a mile to go, he was ten lengths in front. McDevitt- made a great effort to overtake Hannan, who however, kept the lead, winning by 12 lengths. The time was 24 minutes 11 seconds.
McDevitt started off with a much quicker stroke and throughout was rowing faster, but shorter strokes which seemed to lack power. He was at one stage troubled by the rough water, which Hannan negotiated well. Hannan started quickly but settled down to a long swing stroke, averaging 26. At the end of the race, McDevitt said the water was too rough for him and that Hannan had won fair and square. Hannan expressed his intention to try to arrange a match with Paddon for the world's championship but he would stipulate the Waitemata course.
