At the inquest into the circumstances leading to the death of Constable Robert Todd, killed as the result of a motor smash in the early morning of December 14th, Dr. Ahot said he found Todd dead. He attended to two other persons and a Chinaman injured by the collision between a. motor and a Chinese cart. Witness saw beer bottles in the motor. The man whom witness was told had driven the ear was under the influence of liquor. Two others showed signs of having been drinking. Cross-examined, witness would not go so far as to say the driver was drunk. Constable Wales gave evidenco that after the accident the driver said he had been joy-riding. The driver was suffering from drink, want of sleep and shock. The Coroner found that the car was driven negligently, the driver going at excessive speed owing to his intoxication. After the inquest the driver of the car, James Andreiv Fox, was arrested by Senior Sergeant Rawle, and charged that on the 14th day of December, he did cause the death of Todd, thereby committing manslaughter. Accused was brought before Mr Hunt, S.M., this afternoon, when Mr Towle, for accused, applied for a remand until to-morrow. This was granted, accused being allowed his liberty in the meantime.
