MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Wednesday, Sir James Wilson presiding. Also present were Councillors Barber, Hunt, McKelvie, Boyce, Fagan, and Perry. COR.RESPON HENCE. From the Manawaln-Oiona River Board, asking the council to remove willows, near Kangitikei Bridge, as they were obstructing tho river.—lt was decided to reply stating that the council bad no jurisdiction to take action as suggested. From the Manawntii-Oruua Power Board, asking if the council would join a deputation to the Minister Railways regarding the freight on New Zealand grown hardwood poles, and also enquiring if the handling of (lie poles generally could not be improved upon. —Left in the hands of the chairman. From the Main Highways Council advising that il would meet on February 15. and seeking information concerning what were to be declared main highways in the country. —Decided to forward what information was available on such short, notice, though the council’s traffic tally would not be completed in time. From the State Forest Service advising what it could supply in the way of timber and shelter trees for the coming season. Decided to distribute any information available concerning supplies of frees. Reporting on the tramway the engineer stated: The length of old 281 b track is now reduced to 200 yards and plate-laying is held up as there are no sleepers available. We have a good length of packing and levelling to do on the 401 b track before it is quite complete and in first-class order. T have bad the 401 b rails checked, and over and aIjnve the requirements for the main line, there are 544 rails available. This number would lay a further length of 1§ miles. The tramways manager reported that difficulty had been experienced in obtaining boiler tubes for'G’ engine. Some had been procured in Christchurch and it was hoped to get the balance from Auckland, lie would recommend that a shed be erected for the motor lorry at the end of the granary, and that :i new smithy be built at the back of the workshop. Some owners of wandering stock had been prosecuted and lined while a number of motorists and a lorry driver, who had plied for hire without having a license, had been similarly dealt with.
