CIVIL SERVANT’S THEFT.
MISSING MONEYS FROM PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT. Charged with the theft of £27 (Is lid, I lie property of the New Zealand Government, a civil servant named John Walsh Brownlee appeared before Mr E. Page, SAT., at the Wellington Magistrate's Court yesterday. Called by Chief-Detective Kemp. John James Gibson declared that the accused had been employed at the Public Works Department at Wliaugaici until November last. His duty was to account for receipted vouchers, hi October of last year negotiations hail been carried on l>\ l lie Wlinngarei office with S. Foster and Co., Auckland, anil as on outcome of certain missing moneys accused was suspended. Full restitution bad already been made.
Detective Hunt read a statement made by the accused at the deteciive oiliiw, in which he admitted making a bogus voucher, but said that he had already made restitution.
Mr 1). Perry entered a plea of guilty on behalf of Brownlee, who was committed to the upper court for sentence.
