THE HEMP MARKET.
JANUARY GRADING RETURNS
'l'lie grading returns for hemp, tow. stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of January, have been issued by the Department of Agriculture, as follows; — Hemp.— The total number of hales graded was 5,55.1 as compared with 5,103 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 448 bales. For the twelve, months ending 31st January. 1924, the number of hales graded was 61,599, compared with 60,117 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 1,482 bales. Tow. —During the month, 1,518 bales of tow were graded as compared with 1,441 bales for the same month last year, an increase of 77 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st January, 1924, the number of bales graded was 15,300, as compared with 15,457 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 157 bales.
Stripper Tow.—During the month 296 bales of stripper tow were graded, as against nil in January, 1923.
Stripper Slips.-—During the month six hales of stripper slips were graded as compared with 14 hales for the corresponding month last year, a decrease of 8 bales. For the twelve months ending the 31st January, 1924, the number of bales graded was 78 as compared with 86 for the previous twelve mouths, a decrease of 8 bales.
The following’ is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded:— Good High low
Forty-eight bales at Pictou were graded fine, seven bales at Auckland, nine at Foxton, 113 at Wellington and three at Blenheim were rejected. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period lastyear being given in parenthesis. — Fine 48 (82); good fair 1,122 (1,076), high fair 3,471 (2,835), fair 679 (883), common 99 (170), rejected 132 (57), a total of 5,551 bales, being an increase of 448 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was; — Auckland 950. Foxton 1,415, Wellington 1,908, Blenheim 150, Pictou 89, Wairoa 312, Bluff 201, Dunedin 171, Port Chalmers 174, Invercargill 109. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded;
hales el Wellington were condemned The following shows the number of hales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: First grade 517 (515), 2nd grade 765 (831 L), 3rd grade 212 (77), condemned 24 (18), a, total of 1,518 bales, being an increase of 77 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were; — Auckland 312, Foxton 242, Wellington 370, Blenheim 49, Pietou 72 Wuiroa 64, Bluff 170, Dunedin 81, Waikuku 158. Stripper Tow. —Thirty bales at Wellington were graded Ist grade, 248 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade and four at Wellington and fourteen at Wairoa were graded third grade. Stripper-Slips.—Six balps at Auckland were graded 2nd grade.
