HANNAN DEFEATS McDEVITT.

BY NINE LENGTHS

Auckland, February 3

The race for the Australasian sculling championship between Hannan and AlcDevili was rowed on Waitemata harbour, Hannan re- w tabling the title and winning by nine lengths.

The race, was rowed under somewhat trying conditions for the competitors, a strong south-west wind raising a choppy sea in the opening stages. In the circumstances the time of 22 minutes 9 seconds must be regarded as a very fine performance.

On being interviewed after the race, Hannan indicated his desire to row Paddon for the world’s sculling title on the Auckland harbour. He stated his opinion that the upper harbour course in Auckland was far superior to the Wanganui river.

MoDevitt rowed a faster stroke thoughout. the New Zealander being stronger and more scientific, producing long, swinging, rythmical strokes, but securing maximum results. MoDevitt pulled much more jerkily, carrying through with much less perfection than Hannan.

McDEVITT APPEALS. Auckland. Last Night. McDeviil has lodged a formal protest against tho judge’s decision in the sending race. Evidence in regard to the matter will he heard I;v the umpire, Mr Norman Wade, whose decision will be final.
